Viswanathan Anand was born on 11 December 1969 in Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu. After his birth, his family moved to Madras (Chennai). Where he grew up and his father Vishwanathan Iyer was the retired general manager of Southern Railway.
He received his education at Jamalpur, Bihar. His mother Sushila was a housewife and chess coach and an effective social reformer. Anand learning chess from his mother and close relative Deepa Ramakrishnan. He was 6 years old.
Anand completed his studies from Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Egmore, Chennai. He obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Loyola College, Chennai.
